New York City health officials have stepped up their response to a deadly cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in the Bronx, ordering the immediate disinfection of ten cooling towers after tests returned positive for Legionella bacteria. The affected sites are concentrated in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods, specifically within the 10451 and 10456 zip codes. Among the locations flagged for urgent cleaning are Yankee Stadium, Boricua College’s Bronx campus, a local PureGym, and a dialysis center in Morrisania.
The urgency comes as investigators work to pin down the exact source of an outbreak that has already claimed one life and left eight others ill. During a recent town hall meeting intended to calm community fears, officials revealed that preliminary testing conducted just days ago confirmed the presence of the bacteria in these specific water systems. All identified owners have been given until Monday to complete full remediation efforts to ensure no further spread occurs through aerosolized water droplets.
Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin issued a stern warning to property managers during his address, making it clear that negligence would not be tolerated. He emphasized that any building owner found to be noncompliant with safety regulations or failing to maintain their equipment properly will face strict consequences and be held fully accountable for the lapse in public safety.
As the city continues its investigation into how the cluster began, residents seeking more information can attend an upcoming town hall session. The event is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Metropolitan College in the Bronx, where health experts expect to provide updates on the cleanup progress and answer questions from concerned neighbors about the ongoing risk in their community.
