Coroner says baby with measles in Pennsylvania died of a ruptured spleen

A dispute has emerged between public health officials and a local coroner over the cause of death of an infant in Lancaster County, marking one of the first measles-linked fatalities in the United States this year. While the Pennsylvania Health Department categorized the tragedy as a measles associated death due to laboratory evidence of the virus in the child’s lungs, Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni disagrees. According to Diamantoni, his findings indicate that the newborn actually died from an internal hemorrhage caused by a traumatic rupture of the spleen shortly after birth.

The discrepancy centers on whether the viral infection contributed to the physical trauma. Medical experts note that while certain infections can enlarge the spleen and make it more prone to rupturing, Diamantoni stated he found no evidence of such enlargement during his examination. Adding another layer to the investigation, the coroner revealed that the infant was delivered at a birthing center with assistance from a lay midwife who lacked formal certification. This detail suggests that external factors during delivery may have played a significant role in the injury.

Despite these conflicting views, State Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen stands by her department’s classification. Drawing on three decades of experience as a pediatrician, Bogen maintained that both recent deaths in Lancaster County were associated with measles because epidemiological and lab data confirmed those infections existed. The state also noted that both individuals involved were unvaccinated, although newborns cannot receive the MMR vaccine until they are at least twelve months old.

These losses come amid a worrying spike in measles cases across Pennsylvania and the rest of the country, with thousands of confirmations nationwide marking a thirty five year high. In Lancaster County specifically, vaccination rates among children have plummeted well below the ninety five percent threshold required for herd immunity. Some medical professionals warn that these fatalities suggest an outbreak far more severe than current statistics imply, noting that mortality rates currently appearing in this cluster exceed historical averages for the disease.
