Health officials have officially declared an end to the largest outbreak of cyclosporiasis in United States history after a massive spike in parasitic infections swept across twenty one states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday that case numbers have significantly declined, though investigators are still working to pinpoint the exact origin of the contamination. This particular intestinal parasite, known for causing bouts of explosive diarrhea, primarily spreads through tainted water or food sources.
Investigators have linked the surge to lettuce imported from central Mexico by Taylor Farms, a major supplier for numerous American food outlets. In response to the findings, Taylor Farms initiated a voluntary recall of the affected produce, while the fast food giant Taco Bell took immediate action by removing lettuce from that specific supplier from its menus. Despite these measures, the scale of the outbreak was unprecedented; official data shows nearly 20,000 confirmed cases since May 1st, resulting in over 1,000 hospitalizations across forty nine states and Washington D C.
While medical experts note that cyclosporiasis is rarely life threatening for healthy individuals, this outbreak claimed two lives in Michigan. Local health officials clarified that both deceased patients suffered from significant underlying health conditions that were exacerbated by the infection and subsequent dehydration. Because many infected people do not seek formal medical testing, the CDC believes the actual number of victims is likely far higher than what appears in the official records.
The sheer magnitude of this event dwarfs previous spikes in infection rates, such as those seen in 2019 when roughly 4,700 cases were reported nationwide. The reach of this particular strain extended beyond North America as well, with health authorities in the United Kingdom issuing warnings after travelers returning from overseas began presenting with similar symptoms. For now, however, federal agencies believe the peak has passed as they continue their final investigations into the supply chain failure.
