The Food and Drug Administration has escalated a recall of frozen blueberries and mixed berry blends sold at Publix supermarkets to its most severe health risk category. While the initial recall was announced by the retailer on July 29, federal regulators have now officially designated the situation as a Class 1 recall. This specific classification is reserved for scenarios where there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or even death.
The alert centers on several varieties of GreenWise organic whole blueberries and mixed berries distributed across eight states, including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Consumers are being urged to check their freezers for any bags with expiration dates prior to February 9, 2028. Those who find these items should either discard them immediately or return them to a Publix store for a complete refund.
Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that twelve people across two states have already become infected with the specific strain of E. coli linked to this outbreak. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported thus far. However, the FDA warns that E. coli infections typically manifest as severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, and in extreme cases can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome, which may result in life threatening kidney failure.
This escalation comes during a period of heightened scrutiny regarding food safety standards. Just last week, the FDA took similar action by upgrading another separate recall involving eggs due to potential salmonella contamination. For now, shoppers in the affected southeastern states are encouraged to remain vigilant about checking labels on their frozen produce to avoid further illnesses.
