New £19.7m health academy gets ‘bat cave’ approval

A massive investment in Bridgwater’s healthcare infrastructure has cleared its latest hurdle after planners gave the green light to a unique project dubbed a bat cave. The nineteen point seven million pound health academy, funded via the Levelling Up fund, is set to transform the former community hospital site on Salmon Parade into a modern hub for medical education and social care. However, before construction could fully move forward, developers had to address the needs of the local wildlife by creating dedicated mitigation works in the gatehouse attic.

The approved plan involves converting the attic space into a specialized loft designed specifically for bats, ensuring the colony remains protected during the redevelopment. While official documents referred to the structure as a bat dormer, Councillor Matt Martin added a touch of humor to the proceedings during the meeting, noting his disappointment that officials hadn’t opted for the more cinematic term bat cave instead. Despite some brief discussions regarding site security and vandalism, members of the planning committee voted unanimously to approve the measure.

Once complete, the academy will serve as a powerhouse for regional training, with the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust expecting to deliver up to three thousand training sessions annually. Beyond medical schooling, the campus will house an early years center and an independent living center aimed at providing residents with the technology and support necessary to stay in their own homes longer rather than transitioning into nursing facilities.

With strict deadlines looming from central government guidelines, all funding associated with this levelling up project must be under contract by March two thousand twenty seven. This means work must be finished entirely by April two thousand twenty eight. A broader application covering wider regeneration efforts across the site is expected to come before the committee again before Christmas, marking another step toward revitalizing this key area of Bridgwater.
