Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños at Chipotle, Qdoba expands to 27 states

Federal health officials are currently tracking a widespread salmonella outbreak that has left 345 people ill across 27 different states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the contamination has been traced back to jalapeños supplied by California-based Coast Citrus Distributors, which were originally sourced from Mexico. While cases have popped up nationwide, the brunt of the outbreak hit Minnesota and Colorado, where 110 people each fell ill. Thirty six individuals required hospitalization, though fortunately no deaths have been reported thus far.

In response to the findings, major fast casual chains Chipotle and Qdoba both announced they have proactively pulled jalapeños from their menus to protect customers. The CDC indicated that there is likely no further risk at these establishments since the ingredient has been removed, and Coast Citrus Distributors has agreed to issue a formal recall. Meanwhile, investigators from the Food and Drug Administration are looking into whether these contaminated peppers reached local grocery stores or other dining establishments beyond the two major chains mentioned.

This crisis comes at a particularly stressful time for the food industry as it coincides with a separate, much larger outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to lettuce at Taco Bell. That second incident has affected more than 22,000 people and sent over five hundred to the hospital. While some observers find it suspicious that two Mexican-inspired chains are facing outbreaks simultaneously, experts like Byron Chaves from Rutgers University suggest it is likely coincidental and perhaps a result of improved detection methods through modern testing.

Despite the eventual identification of the source, some critics argue that federal agencies moved too slowly. Chaves pointed out that reports of salmonella infections had surfaced in Minnesota early in the summer long before official action was taken. This delay has sparked questions about why the public health response system appears fragmented when dealing with rapidly spreading foodborne illnesses across state lines.
