Sanford Health, North Memorial Health complete partnership

Sanford Health and North Memorial Health have officially finalized their partnership, merging into a single nonprofit integrated health system operating under the Sanford Health name. This strategic move aims to bridge the gap between rural and urban healthcare delivery across Minnesota, creating a first of its kind network designed to tackle modern industry challenges like workforce shortages and rising patient demand. By blending North Memorial’s specialized expertise in trauma and emergency medicine with Sanford’s broad reach in primary and virtual care, the organization hopes to provide a more seamless experience for patients regardless of where they live.

A central piece of the agreement focuses on stabilizing and upgrading key facilities. Most notably, the system has committed to maintaining Robbinsdale Hospital as a Level I Trauma Center for at least ten years, ensuring that critical safety net services remain intact. To support this, Sanford plans to invest roughly 100 million dollars into modernizing the Robbinsdale site, addressing deferred maintenance and updating equipment. Additionally, another 500 million dollars is slated for the expansion of Maple Grove Hospital to accommodate rapid population growth in that region of the Twin Cities.

Beyond infrastructure, the merger emphasizes an expanded approach to behavioral health and medical education. The system intends to embed mental health therapists directly into primary care clinics throughout the Minneapolis metro area, mirroring a successful model already used by Sanford elsewhere. There will also be renewed investments in graduate medical education and trauma residency programs to bolster the state’s healthcare pipeline for future generations.

From a leadership perspective, Trevor Sawallish will lead the newly formed Twin Cities care delivery region alongside his current management team and a local board of directors. Meanwhile, Bill Gassen will continue as president and CEO of the overall combined organization. Both leaders expressed confidence that this integration allows them to offer advanced models of care that would have been impossible for either entity to achieve independently, ultimately keeping life saving treatment closer to home for Minnesotans.
