Americans want transparency when AI is used in their healthcare

As artificial intelligence begins to reshape the landscape of modern medicine, from interpreting complex radiology scans to automating clinical notes, patients are voicing a clear demand for honesty. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, there is a significant gap between the rapid integration of these technologies and the level of communication happening in exam rooms. Nearly three quarters of American adults believe it is extremely or very important for their healthcare providers to disclose when AI is being utilized in their care.

The desire for transparency extends far beyond high stakes medical decisions. While over eighty percent of respondents insist on knowing if AI is helping diagnose a condition or analyze lab results, many also want to be kept in the loop regarding smaller details. For instance, seventy two percent of people want to know if an AI tool is taking notes during their appointment, and a majority wish to be notified even when AI handles administrative chores like processing prescription refills or scheduling visits.

Despite these preferences, many patients feel they are currently passengers in their own care journeys rather than active participants. More than half of those surveyed reported having little to no say in whether AI tools are employed by their doctors. This feeling of powerlessness has led sixty three percent of Americans to state that they would like more control over how technology interacts with their personal health data and treatment plans.

These findings emerge at a critical moment as legal experts and ethicists debate whether obtaining explicit patient consent should be a mandatory requirement for using AI tools. With wide agreement across different ages, genders, and backgrounds, it appears that while patients may accept the efficiency of machine learning, they aren’t willing to sacrifice transparency for convenience.
