A distinguished collective of twenty one former international cricket captains has stepped forward to demand that the Pakistani government provide adequate medical attention to imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. In a poignant letter addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, sporting legends such as India’s Sunil Gavaskar and England’s Sir Alastair Cook expressed deep concern over the health of the seventy three year old leader. The group specifically highlighted reports that Khan was granted only a brief window of time at a state hospital last week, raising questions about whether he is receiving the comprehensive care required for his age and condition.
The athletes, describing themselves as former rivals bound by a connection that transcends national borders and political disputes, outlined several urgent requests. Chief among these is the demand for an independent medical board, overseen by Pakistan’s Supreme Court and including Khan’s own physicians, to assess his health. They are particularly concerned regarding reports of vision loss in his right eye. Additionally, the signers called for an end to administrative delays preventing weekly family visits and insisted that any necessary treatments be administered without further hesitation.
This intervention comes amid a tense legal battle between Khan’s party and the state. While the Supreme Court recently directed that Khan be transferred to a private facility for examination, he was instead seen by government doctors who declared him medically fit before returning him to his cell. This discrepancy led Khan’s legal team to file a contempt petition against the government, alleging a blatant disregard for judicial orders regarding his access to private healthcare providers.
Greg Chappell, the former Australian captain who helped initiate the letter, emphasized that regardless of the complex legal or political arguments surrounding Khan’s incarceration, basic human decency should prevail. With signatures ranging from Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist to Kapil Dev and Nasser Hussain, the plea serves as a reminder of the global stature Khan once held both on the pitch and in politics. Since his imprisonment in August 2023 on various corruption charges which he vehemently denies, Khan has become a lightning rod for massive protests and ongoing controversy within Pakistan.
